During the third trimester, students in Novice Spanish discussed topics ranging from school life, to how to describe ourselves and others, to the environment and pollution, and even sea turtles! We based a large portion of our studies on two novels, Esmeralda la tortuga marina by Kristy Placido (a tale of a baby sea turtle who embarks on a harrowing quest to find her mother) and La clase de confesiones by AC Quintero (the first book in a series about the many secrets of students in a high school Spanish class!). Grammatically, we dove deeper into the present tense, specifically focusing on the present progressive, the uses of the verbs “ser” and “estar”, and even the reflexives for High School Novice. Students demonstrated their learning with a variety of projects, ranging from narrating animated videos, to creating inspiring posters about the many threats that plague sea turtles, and even producing and performing original puppet shows! Please enjoy exploring just how much our novice learners have accomplished this school year!
The last trimester of Novice High Middle school was a time for students to consolidate on past knowledge and learn new tools to prepare to enter the Intermediate level class. The main theme we focused on was Health and Daily Routine, through the lens of Paraguay and Bolivia. Using reflexive verbs and the verb doler, students learned to describe their day in detail, as well as discussing body aches and pains. This culminated in their first project of the trimester, Mi Monstruo. As the class had been focusing on the different parts of the body, students were asked to think of creatures with an abnormal number of arms, legs, eyes etc. Each person then created their own creatures and labeled every visible (and invisible) body part (consolidating the newly learned vocabulary for the body). Once the students had labeled their monsters, they were asked to write an introduction to these creatures, making sure to use a variety of verbs and adjectives studied in class. Additionally, we reviewed the use of the verb gustar through the introduction of the verb doler and practiced using them in our second project, Esquema del Cuerpo Humano. Indeed, the student’s second project consisted in creating a life size outline of a human body, on which they drew a variety of ailments and illnesses, using their creativity and the vocabulary studied in class to display their progress. To wrap up the class’ focus on health and the vocabulary surrounding the body, students took part in a week-long final project, in which they got to showcase the incredible progress they made this year, by writing their own scenes and performing them! Their creativity truly shined in this project and the result were these incredibly funny skits!
