Salva las tortugas (Novice)
During third trimester, students in Novice Spanish tackled their second novel of the school year: Esmeralda, la tortuguita marina by Kristy Placido. In this book, a baby turtle named Esmeralda, born on the beach in Puerto Vallarta, México, embarks on a journey to find her mother. While reading this book, students learned about the life cycle of the endangered sea turtle and the many challenges they face in their lifetime. As a project, students created a product that would generate public awareness about the plight of sea turtles. Student projects range from posters, to sculptures, to comic strips, each one highlighting a different issue associated with sea turtles, and their own personal recommendations for how we can help protect them! Students had the chance to present their projects to each other and other Meridian students during an in-class “conferencia”. Please check out their work below!
Frances says: Reading about Esmerelda made me appreciate wildlife and sea creatures way more. She was just a tiny little baby turtle, and I enjoyed being able to educate people about how they can help the environment while also doing it in a comic book format I enjoyed was awesome.
Rose says: I loved that we learned about the impact of light pollution and littering. I think it is awesome we got to learn about this important topic in Spanish!
Akea says: I really liked this project cause I got to learn about a lot of things that I wouldn't have learned about otherwise.
Izzy says: I absolutely loved this project. It was a great way to try and use creativity on our own while using Spanish. Plus, we learned more about turtles than I think any of us knew!
