YO: Poema (auto)biográfico (N-MS / N-HS)
Roberto el conejo knows who he is. He is not strong like el primo Pedro. He does not have rosy cheeks like la abuela Margarita, nor the long legs of su hermana Claudia. He isn’t like anyone else in his family! He is just like himself! Unique! After reading the short story “Soy” by Raquel Cané, Novice MS and HS students spent time learning and using targeted vocabulary to describe their personality and physical appearance. Simultaneously, they learned the uses and the present tense conjugation of the verbs ser (to be) and tener (to have). For their project they each wrote a 12 line free verse poem, about themselves or a fictional character, in which they not only had to describe physical appearance and personality, but share information about age, family, and occupation. For the creative expression portion of this project they each created a digital collage. For their piece they searched for royalty-free photos and clipart images, and combined them with a hand-drawn silhouette of their subjects' side profile. Prior to adding a digital copy of this image to their digital collage, each student hand wrote their poem next to their silhouette.
