Capítulo 8: Llama en Lima (N-MS / N-HS)

After escaping the zoo in Lima, with her friends Mono and Cuy, Llama has many adventures around Perú’s capital. They visit some of its most famous sites like el Parque de Aguas, la playa de Miramar, el Museo Histórico, and el barrio chino de Lima. In this last neighborhood the animals have the opportunity to taste Chinese Peruvian dishes. Unluckily for them, they get sick and are taken to a vet. All this adventuring has them missing their caretaker, Hombre, and their home at the zoo, but there is a problem… they don’t know how to get back!

The students in Novice Middle and High School were able to not only read about these fun adventures around Lima, but also to discover what happens to the three animals in the end. The book, however, has an open-ended finale which lends itself to a continuation of the story. Hence, for their project students were tasked with writing an extra chapter for the book. In writing these chapters they had to incorporate the vocabulary and grammar concepts learned throughout their first year in Spanish class. They each brainstormed content (Paso #1) and wrote twelve additional events (Paso #2) to create their chapters. These events make use of vocabulary words learned from the book, personal pronouns. regular -AR, -ER, -IR verbs in the present tense, the verb GUSTAR, definite and indefinite articles, and demonstrate their grasp of gender and number agreement in nouns and adjectives. To highlight their favorite moments in the story, students selected six events and created a storyboard using the website storyboardthat.com. Once these were finished, they recorded their reading of all twelve events. This last task mimicked a routine we started doing during MAVVERIC in which they recorded their readings of chapters four, five, six, and seven on FlipGrid.
