Una receta importante para mí y mi familia (IMS)
Our second project for our food unit was inspired by the short story “La piñata de cumpleaños“ from the book Cuentos con sazón written by Puerto Rican author Lulu Delacre. This book explores the connection between food and memories; hence, for their project, students selected a recipe that holds a special place in their families. To start, they wrote their own short stories based on a memory. To write this story they used the preterite and imperfect tenses, in order to narrate events that happened in the past. After completing extensive revisions to their stories, they recorded their reading of it.
For the second part of the project, they translated recipes of the dishes they had showcased in their stories. To do this, they used vocabulary related to cooking, such as measurements and cooking equipment, as well as the informal tú commands to write out the instructions to prepare the food. Once these recipe cards were ready, it was time to prepare the dish! Each student recorded and edited a video were they make their recipe.
As a celebratory and delicious way to end this project, they each brought what they had cooked to class, and we shared a meal (safely outside in the yard), while they read their stories to each other!
