Memoriales (I2)
After reading the book Minerva, we looked at ways in which this chapter of the Dominican Republic history had been immortalized through memorials. There are many different parks, murals, and sculptures dedicated to Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa Maribal, las mariposas, killed by Trujillo’s men on November 25th, 1960. However, there are not as many memorials dedicated to Dedé, the sister who survived and went on to take care of all of her sister’s children, nor of others who also fought against trujillismo.
With this in mind, students went on to design their own memorials. They could choose whether they wanted to honor all or a specific Mirabal sister, a character from the book, or another person or group of people involved in the fight against Trujillo. They had the choice to create a scaled sculpture model or a scaled mural. In order to complete their project, students first had to create a written plan explaining the message they wanted to convey through their piece. They then created pencil-drawn sketches envisioning their memorials. Lastly, they wrote artist statements in which they described their piece in detail, the meaning behind it, and their creative process.
We hope you enjoy these thoughtful, unique, and creative pieces!
