Chat live with our students! After perusing the pages here on our Exhibitions Site, join us for two student Zoom panels on the evening of June 10:
Panel 1 will start at 6:45pm and feature Cameron, Juanzi, and Maya (click this link!)
Panel 2 will start at 7:25pm and feature Izzy, Jamie, and Nina (click this link!)
This trimester Division 4 MST continued our exploration of Physics and Calculus by diving into integral calculus and energy. We began the trimester by learning new integration methods and applying them to a social justice context by looking at income inequality in various populations using the Gini Coefficient. We then applied our knowledge of integration to Physics, exploring the relationship between power and energy and looking into the world of renewable energy. We considered our own homes and energy usage to determine whether a rooftop solar array would be a worthwhile investment for our families, and wrote persuasive letters summarizing our findings.
Next, the Div 4 Juniors learned about optics and conic sections and explored how light connects us to the world around us. After exploring properties of light like reflection and refraction, we researched an object of our choice and learned more about the optics of our chosen object. We summarized our findings into a one page handout. Finally, we explored how manipulating light can lead to an intersection of art and science; we created water drop lenses to magnify the world around us, and colorized astronomical images to show how a creative human touch is sometimes necessary even in the world of science.
