This trimester in Europe and Africa Through Each Other’s Eyes we began with The History of Africa: The Quest for Eternal Harmony by Molefi Kete Asante, starting with early Egyptian history. Students compared the works of Percy Shelly and Niyi Osundare, Geoffrey Chaucer and Felix Mnthali. We then moved from discussions of dynasty to those of communism, the early Pharaoh ideas of authoritarian rule and Marx's ideas of communistic rule. We then moved to the European Enlightenment, Voltaire, Adam Smith, the cottage industry, Galiloe to Newton, early industrial revolution, European expansion into Africa, and created an Oral presentation project on a specific revolution in Europe. We ended the trimester with a Visual Analysis project, examining the works of Kara Walker, Vermeer, and Ibrahim El-Salahi, and comparing African and European perspectives in contemporary and classic art found from the online collections of the Modern Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
