Embroidery, Divisions 3 and 4
Our plan this spring to enjoy a broad variety of sewing and fibers artforms (as initially scheduled) was adapted into a dedicated Embroidery class. Embroidery is an easily accessible process, in both materials and technique. With the basic tools provided -- fabric, floss, needles, and hoop -- and in many cases no prior experience, students discovered the limitless possibilities in the visual information they could create. Students started with a traditional basic embroidery sampler, demonstrating understanding of a variety of stitched effects. Following an interim project designed to help them advance their abilities in a more individualized direction, students planned and designed a long-term project that took most through the rest of the term. Reproducing images ranging from original drawings to Impressionist paintings to special photographs, these final projects represented the personal interests and aesthetics of each stitcher.
