Llamas en Boston (Novice)

During the second trimester, students in Novice Spanish read Katie Baker’s Llama en Lima, a short novel about a llama who is bored of her cage at the Lima Zoo in Perú, and hatches a plan to escape with her two friends, Mono (monkey) and Cuy (guinea pig). The three animals then spend a wild and crazy day traveling throughout the city of Lima, visiting several tourist destinations and learning about certain cultural and historical facts about life in Perú.

While reading this book, students received their very own miniature stuffed llamas, for which they invented background information including the llama’s name, hometown, personality traits, and likes. Then, students spent several weeks traveling around Boston and nearby areas with their llamas documenting their adventures in a journal, written from the perspective of the llamas. Students arranged their journals in a variety of ways, including physical paper diaries, digital slideshows, and even video logs (or vlogs).

Please enjoy clicking through all the different “Llama en Boston” projects to see what our students and their four-footed furry friends have been up to! Maybe you even happened to catch a glimpse of the llamas over the past few weeks! Who did you see and where? If you had a “pet” llama to travel with, where would you go? What would you do? Comment below!

Genesee: I absolutely LOVED this project. It was so nice to have a reason to go outside and into the city even during a pandemic, and I loved having to create a personality for my Llama and, coolest of all, having to express it ALL in Spanish!

Frances: This project was undeniably fun! I really loved being able to create a whole personality and life for my llama, and I thought this was a nice opportunity to use all the new language skills we’ve learned in trimester 2.

Eleanor: I loved writing about my llama Indigo,! It really got me excited about writing in Spanish, but in a really fun way. I got to be creative, and it made me realize just how much I can say in Spanish!

Marvin: Doing this project was pretty exciting, I enjoyed taking photos and setting up my slides like a journal!
