Las noticias del mundo hispanohablante (Novice)

Both to develop their reading skills and to learn about current events in the Spanish speaking world, students read three news articles over the course of first trimester. One news article described a young entrepreneur from Colombia, another described a popular rapper from Mexico, and the third discussed the controversy over the recent elimination of the gender nonspecific pronoun “elle” from the Observatorio, an online platform for popular words and phrases run by the Real Academia Española, or the Royal Spanish Academy. For each article, students identified main ideas, some details, and cognates to demonstrate reading comprehension.

Frances says: “Reading those articles and understanding almost every word just gave me such a sense of pride, and it was good to see how far I’d come with learning Spanish.”

Eleanor says: “I thought that it was really cool to read about things in the Spanish-speaking world. We hear so much about the English-speaking world, so it was nice to hear about what’s happening in other parts of the world.”

Genesee says: “I enjoyed reading about the pronoun “elle”, and the politics behind that. I sometimes get caught up in American politics, and taking a step back is nice - especially when it’s written in Spanish!”

Hallie says: “I got to learn about the news in a different part of the country while also learning a new language!”

Marvin says: “This assignment was fun because the articles we read weren’t too difficult but we still learned new words.”
