This term in Engineering, students focused on 2D and 3D geometry, starting with concepts of area, perimeter, surface area, and volume. With these building blocks, they began exploring Onshape, a professional online product design software for computer-aided design (CAD). Students were able to explore this 3D viewpoint, using different drawing methodologies on paper and on screen. Students practiced converting between isometric views (looking at the angle of a 3D image) and orthographic views (looking straight-on at different sides of an object). They applied these principles to multiple Onshape documents, including an initials cube and an accurate recreation of a household object.
In Marine Science this term, students explored the evolutionary trends of the world around them. To do so they first grounded themselves in the historical context of evolutionary theory, following Darwin’s journey around the world and creating their own Darwin maps. They then took the knowledge they gained and applied it in creating their own phylogenies of organisms they themselves found in the areas surrounding their homes. In addition to that, students learned about electricity, and how the circuits that power their everyday lives function. They then used that knowledge to draw out and explain circuit diagrams of household circuits they were interested in.
