Vector: Expresión Creativa (I2)

During this trimester, students in Intermedio 2 read the short novel Vector by Carrie Toth, which follows a young Panamanian teenager through a life-changing experience. After being bit by an infected mosquito, Antonio is transported back to the early 1900s where he finds himself working on the Panama Canal alongside his great grandfather. While reading this book, students explored themes related to the transmission of diseases through vectors, the daily life of workers and the segregation and discrimination many of them faced, and the history, engineering, and overall significance of the canal for Panama. As a final project, students created a variety of art pieces in response to the symbols and themes presented in the book. Each creative expression piece is accompanied by an artist statement in which students explain their artistic distinctions as well as their connection to the book.
