This Trimester in Africa and Europe Through Each Other’s Eyes we began with Poetry Out Loud, an annual poetry recitation competition, where students first wrote about the essential themes and poetic forms of three poems, and then memorized one poem to perform. Students then read “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad, and completed an essay project called “Is Heart of Darkness a Racist Text?”. In this project each student was asked to respond to the prompt and go beyond a simple yes or no answer, delving deep into the text. Students also read essays by Kittitian-British author Caryl Phillips and Nigerian author Chinua Achebe in order to expand their perspectives on the novel. From here students read “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, and did research on colonization in Nigeria, and well as extensive research on the Igbo people, presenting their findings on both.
