The reading La ciudad de las bestias gave our class the opportunity to discuss and delve deeper into the problems that plague the Amazon rainforest.
In the book we are first led to believe that the native “savages“ and the monstrous bestia are responsible for the killing of innocent people. However, we slowly discover that there is more than meets the eye, and that the greed of “civilized“ foreigners is to blame. After traveling down the Río Negro, Alex and the International Geographic crew arrive at Santa María de la Lluvia, a fictional town that represents the last enclave of “civilization” within the story. There Alex meets the priest Valdomero who tells him, and his newfound friend Nadia, about the countless and dangerous fortune-seekers who threaten to destroy the rainforest.
As we reached this point in the plot, we were curious to know more about mankind’s role in the destruction of the forest. We embarked on the challenging task of reading and comprehending the dense article “La gran mentira verde“, which discusses some of the problems in depth and their impact to our planet. We were in awe of what we learned and wanted to create a project in which we informed others of this alarming situation.
For their final project, students went on to create a PSA (public service announcement). They chose from a variety of topics and two possible mediums, a poster or a video, to educate others about their topic of choice. Then they went on to do research and take detailed notes on several articles in Spanish. For his project, Evan wrote a script prior to filming and editing his PSA video. Jesús brainstormed and organized his ideas before getting to work in Canva on his poster. After finishing his video, Evan shared it on his YouTube channel. Meanwhile, Jesús placed copies of his poster around his and Meridian’s neighborhood.
We hope you enjoy these products and learn more about the wonderful, but endangered Amazon rainforest.
