Collage, Division 3
This term, students learned that collage is a pretty broad medium, and a fairly recent one, too. It can be an accessible way to approach ideas and concepts, allowing artists to filter and organize images and techniques within a constrained space. This term, students were asked to design work from a place of representation for their primary project. Instead of thinking about an idea to convey, students thought about images, and how to design a space to present the images they wanted to explore.
The other main component to the term was regular homework assignments that allowed students to explore collage in even more individualized and independent ways. At the beginning of the term, each student proposed a concept or theme. Each week, we would draw one of the entries, such as Reality or Curiosity. The students completed a small collage on 4x6 inch chipboard to illustrate their interpretation of that concept, which we would share at the beginning of each class. The innovation, resourcefulness, and generosity with which students treated these themes suggested by their classmates were truly special, and the work reflects that dedication.
