Collage, Div 1

To begin the term, students looked at collage and how it can be used in painterly, technical, and expressive ways. Through the work of artists such as Romare Bearden and Ekua Holmes, as well as student exemplars, students observed how many pieces can successfully (or not so!) come together to create an image, narrative, or graphic. What are some techniques artists use to create texture within an object? How does the artist organize the different components to bring them together? What different kinds of materials can be used to contribute to a unified picture?

In order to determine a subject for their collages, students brainstormed and summarized several childhood memories and how they might illustrate them. Working from sketched ideas, sourcing example images for observation, and experiments with materials, students spent the term executing finished collages. Students found a variety of ways to personalize their images, incorporate a range of materials and textures, and convey elements and principles of design.

As is common for many art classes at Meridian, students continued to keep a sketchbook for homework assignments and classwork. The regular practice of observational drawing and reflection on their progress helps students see and appreciate their growth. This term, students continued the process of quick two-minute sketches from observation, followed by a longer, 25-minute drawing with increased detail.
