Mi Juego (Novice High)
We began the year in Spanish Novice High focusing on the vocabulary for leisure, sports and games. This lead us to study a few traditional sports from Hispanic countries, their rules and origins. As we were reviewing the use of the present tense and learning new structures such as “hay que” and “me gusta”, students got to be creative and imagine their own game! They had to create it from scratch, finding a name for the game, defining the rules and the type of activity it was. In order to present their game to the world, students created posters, using Canva, which helped illustrate their ideas.
As we studied new vocabulary for sports and leisure, we also discovered the country of Colombia, and learned how to discuss all types of weather. In order to incorporate this new language in the project, students went over what would be the ideal time of the year, weather and place to play their game… their answers ranged from rainy days when you want to stay indoors, to hot summer afternoons spent in the water of the Pacific coast of Colombia.
The final aspect of this project included a speaking proponent: presenting their game to the rest of the class, in the hopes of getting their game voted “most creative”, “most fun”, “craziest” and finally “most realistic”. The most realistic game, will hopefully be played, as soon as we are safely able to.
Students were encouraged to express themselves in this project, but also help each other out and give each other invaluable feedback. Each student asked questions at the end of the games presentation and kept notes in order to justify their decisions throughout the voting process.
