For this year’s Junior Research project, I aimed to answer the question: How has form, construction, material, color, and culture been incorporated into the works of Japanese Avant-Garde designers during the 20th century? My goal for this project was to research the historical contexts that created Western fashion culture, discover how the works of Avant-Garde designers differed from those standards, and to highlight how the work of these designers revolutionized fashion as a whole. Using my Literature Review as guidance, I placed myself in the shoes of Japanese Avant-Garde designers like Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto, and came up with my own original garments using inspirations from Kawakubo and Yamamoto. This project combined illustration with garment creation to create a runway collection made up of three distinct designs, as well as one physical outfit sewn and presented on a dress form.
