El zapato y la carta para los Reyes Magos (IMS)
On January 5th, the eve of Three Kings Day, children across the world prepare to celebrate this special holiday. They clean their favorite pair of shoes and place them near their bed, a window or the entrance to their home. Alongside it, they place a box filled with grass and a cup of water, for the camels. They leave a letter, addressed to Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltazar, the three kings, in which they share highlights of the past year, as well as wishes and hopes for the new year. Early the following morning, they wake up to find sweets and gifts inside and around their shoes. From Spain, to Puerto Rico, and México, it is a celebration filled with joy and excitement.
This trimester in our Español Intermedio Middle School class we learned about the celebration. We watched and discussed a short video that explains its origins. We also read about the different activities and rituals that children around the world do to celebrate. Then we wrote our very own letters, introducing ourselves, talking about activities we did in 2020, as well as our wishes for 2021. We also created a paper shoe following a simple mold. We decorated our shoe with elements that connected it to the contents of our letter. Once finished, we filled the shoe with grass made out of paper. Lastly, we read out our letters in FlipGrid, compared them in class, and presented our finished shoes.
It was a fun way to return from our Winter Break!
