How Will We Remember Covid-19?
The pandemic has greatly impacted the lives of everyone over the past year, and while we are still reeling from the impact of Covid-19, we wanted to think about how we remember important historical events and how we might remember Covid-19 after the worst of the pandemic is over.
Students first brought images to class that made them think about the pandemic. Some brought images of children looking out windows, others of government leaders, others of masks. Then we looked at a collection of photos from the Library of Congress in which we noticed a number of empty streets, people standing alone or far away from others, and a general sense of joylessness. We then read the poem “When the Virus Comes” by Angelo Geter. Students then got the opportunity to create their own visuals depicting how they would remember the virus.
