¡Las apariencias engañan!
This school year, students in Advanced 1 are reading a three-book series by A.C. Quintero. In book 1, called Las Apariencias Engañan, we are introduced to a group of teenagers entangled in a variety of scandalous events ranging from love triangles, to missing persons, to suddenly reappearing persons, to a severe cat allergy! As one might imagine, this book lends itself to a plethora of interesting vocabulary. Students compiled a list of their favorite words and phrases from the book (a whopping 58!), and then chose at least 25 of those (along with our grammatical target this trimester: the past subjunctive!) to incorporate into their own original stories, which you can read below! Which new phrase or word do you like the most?
Book 2 of the series, El Armario, takes a deeper dive into the mysterious disappearances of a few town residents as well as the ups and downs of teen romance. With too many plot twists to list here, students recorded a confessional-style video of their own thoughts about the progression of the story and their predictions for the final installment of the series, which we will read in Trimester 3. Please enjoy their 2-3 minute monologues in which they practice unrehearsed, organic speech in Spanish!
Nico: This project really allowed me to find creative ways to tie these words into a central theme, and then to make a story with that theme.
Esmé: I enjoyed this project because I learned a lot of new Spanish vocabulary while reading this book and I also really liked the story.
Zayna: I really liked this project because I learned a lot of new vocabulary and phrases that I now use in Spanish class! My favorite word that I learned is “¡caramba!”
