"La guitarra": El poema ilustrado (A1)

As we began our study of the Spanish Civil War, we discussed the historical and political reasons that eventually led to the war. During these discussions, we read one of Federico García Lorca’s most famous poems called “La guitarra”, which he wrote partly in response to the injustice and marginalization of the Romaní people during that time period. Overall the poem ties together themes of cultural and national identity through the metaphor of the flamenco guitar, the music of the Romaníes. After analyzing the poem, we illustrated its themes and symbols, and discussed our artistic choices as well as the historical context of the poem. Finally, we recorded our artist statements out loud and put them together in a video featuring our artwork.

Jesse says: “I really loved this project because it was a chance to learn about this time in Spanish history, and it was an interesting challenge to illustrate the poem in ways that added to it. I also really loved seeing all of the different ways it the poem was interpreted in all of our projects.”

Nico says: “I enjoyed finding creative ways to illustrate the themes in the poem.”

Zayna says: “It was really interesting to learn about the symbolism behind different images in the poem!”
