Zoom Backgrounds, Division 1

This past March, Meridian transitioned to online learning for all of Term 3. Restricted to learning inside our homes, many utilized the Zoom feature of changing backgrounds in order to imagine environments and climates that were currently inaccessible. Imagining the Zoom background as a theatrical backdrop inspired the idea of designing two-dimensional drawings that could transport students to a space that felt fun, personal, and completely invented.

Students began by learning the fundamentals of one-point perspective, drawing objects and creating practice sketches of three-dimensional spaces. The creative work began with the imagining of a thematic room that would allow them to express their interests, personality, and style. Students first drafted and revised several versions in their sketchbooks before tackling the large-scale piece. Their final backgrounds are drawn with oil pastel on three-by-four foot canvas.
