Embroidery, Divisions 3 and 4

The materials and techniques for embroidery are accessible and portable. With limited or no experience, students can easily pick up the basic techniques needed to begin to imagine more complicated and imaginative processes.

Students who were new to embroidery started with a traditional sampler, demonstrating understanding of a variety of stitched effects. Following an interim project designed to help them advance their abilities in a more individualized direction, students planned and designed a long-term project that took most through the rest of the term. Reproducing and enhancing images ranging from original drawings to Cubist paintings to special photographs, these final projects represented the personal interests and aesthetics of each stitcher.

Returning students were able to immediately begin work on projects generated by their own imaginations. In addition, some contributed to the beginning of a collaborative work of embroidery. Working within individual squares, students took turns incorporating their original, graphic image into a quilt-like textile.
