Another Question You Can Use to Better Understand Schools That You Are Exploring

What does it mean to be a college preparatory school?

Almost every independent high school claims to be “college preparatory.” Meridian does, too, but we distinguish between preparing a student for their time at college and the process of applying to and enrolling at a college. Getting into a college that is a good fit for a student is obviously important – you can learn more here about the positive and structured way we approach that work with our students and how we share what makes each student a great match for a college. But getting into a college and making the best of the opportunities are not the same, and you want your child’s secondary school to have a vision for the ways in which your child can be involved throughout their college years.

Too many students pass through college with little to no mentorship or individual attention from their professors and with too many lectures that could just as well be watched on recorded videos. Building off of their work at Meridian, our students have the confidence and skills to approach professors and work on their research efforts; to collaborate with classmates on challenging projects; and to join, lead, and even found campus organizations. Meridian students can appreciate the fleeting fun of a party or other entertainment, but they come to college with a deep appreciation that what matters most to them are efforts that are long-lasting and purposeful. They know what it feels like to work with others to achieve something important and they recognize that gratifying work that might involve failure, problem-solving, revision, and ultimate success means more to them than the many quick thrills college life can also provide. As a result, they make healthy choices that lead to a fun and productive four years.
