The Outsiders Thesis Essay
S.E. Hinton’s classic novel The Outsiders is set in 1960s Tulsa, Oklahoma. Through a teenage narrator named Ponyboy, the book explores the dynamics between two warring gangs in the city: the lower-class greasers and the upper-class Socs. After reading the novel, students wrote original thesis essays making arguments about how social class affects the characters in the book. Some of the questions that students tackled include:
What is the greatest lesson that Ponyboy learns about social class throughout the novel?
In what way does social class most affect the characters throughout the book?
What does it take for the two groups to overcome their differences?
